Schallaburg

So, the Austrian railways had this offer where you could ride with them to a town outside of Vienna called Melk, visit a castle called Schallaburg, take a boat ride down the Danube in the wine area called the Wachau and then ride the train from a town called Krems to Vienna...Does that sound fun guys? Do you want to do that?

Here is the landscape along the way....picturesque and pretty....

First we arrive in Melk. This is a town famous for it's monastery, but first, we'll now catch a bus to go to Schallaburg castle...

There it is! This is considered the best Renaissance-era castle north of the Alps - aren't we lucky?! ;)

The entrance...if you guys want the details just Google or Wikipedia 'Schallaburg'....they'll let you know what's up....

The carvings are QUITE cool!

So, they can bring in the Americans cuz we love castles cuz we never see them, but castles will bring in the Europeans who live next to castles by having special exhibitions...the theme for this one was the 60's....strange mix, Renaissance castle and the 1960's, but...it brought in the Austrians and it was cute...most of these grey-haired retirees would've grown up for done a lot of their living during the 1960's...it was fun to see them smiling and remembering that decade....

The oldest part of the castle/fortress...

Renaissance for sure! That tower looks totally like something I'd imagine to be in Italy....

Gardens in the distance....

The carvings are quite impressive...and each one seems to be individual...no copies....

Phun timez for the kiddz....playing with the dragon in the moat ;)

Die Gardenz....

Purdy....

I loved this...they had a piece of polished metal that was a sort of mirror...they wrote "Every human a work of art?" I wish they would have left out the question mark and just said it...

"Every human IS a work of art!" There...that's better...

Wunderbar!

There is where I got dizzy and sick from twirling in a circle singing 'The Mountains are alive with the Sound of Music'....

(no, I didn't do that - that hill is in Salzburg! Please people...)

Like I said...the exhibition just was weird....Woodstock on the grounds of a Renaissance-era castle....hmm.....but the Austrians seemed to like it...

Back into the courtyard....

Hit the picture and look at the details...

Thanks Schallaburg! Enjoyed my time with you and now off to Melk and the monastery!
